Papain is a proteolytic enzyme derived from the papaya plant (Carica papaya). This enzyme functions by breaking down the keratin proteins that bond dead skin cells to the skin’s surface.
Here’s a breakdown of how it impacts the skin:
1. Exfoliation: Papain’s proteolytic activity enables it to dissolve and lift away dead skin cells, enhancing cell turnover. This gentle exfoliation leaves skin smoother and softer.
2. Brightening: By removing dead cells that can make skin look dull, papain reveals a fresher layer of skin, leading to a brighter, more radiant complexion.
3. Improving Skin Tone and Texture: Papain's enzymatic action helps reduce buildup and improve uneven tone/pigmentation, promoting a more even skin tone and smoother texture.
4. Anti-inflammatory Benefits: Papain contains anti-inflammatory properties that help to calm and soothe irritated or inflamed skin, making it a suitable treatment for acne-prone skin types.
5. Assisting with Blemishes and Scarring: By promoting cell turnover, papain can help in gradually fading post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) and scarring from blemishes, aiding in skin renewal.
